the Burton style evokes trees
that come from another
planet. This elm, Ulmus
parvifolia, won a prize at the
European Bonsai-San Show
2018, in Saulieu, France.
The Burton style, a new style created
by Law and Vev in 2006, is still stoking
debate, even though a tree that adheres
to it has been awarded a prize in a major
European exhibition.

When Hervé Dora (“Vev”)
and I created the Burton style – named
in honour of Tim Burton and the
worlds he conjures up – in 2006, we
had no idea that it would cause such
a stir or give rise to such a mass of
backbiting and bad faith. We’ve heard
it all along the course of a journey that
has consisted of producing in real life
what we had envisioned on paper.
Many of our detractors claimed that
you can’t work with a tree which has
long branches, that over-wiring a tree
will eventually lead to its demise, etc.
So many false assertions that we
have overturned through practice, by
