“i’ve always had a problem with authority,”
Clare Arnold told Brandon when they met at a
square dance. Still a high schooler when she fi rst
encountered the college freshman in season 4,
Clare knew a thing or two about authority—her
father was California University’s chancellor,
which was enough to ward off Brandon despite
Clare’s best eff orts at seduction. On their second
meeting she declared that she had turned 18 and
“somehow magically the word ‘jailbait’ vanished
from my forehead.” Hours later she showed
up uninvited at his house and, dressed in black
lingerie, handcuff ed herself in his bedroom.
Clare, brilliant enough to skip her freshman
year in college (she was fl uent in fi ve languages),later moved into Kelly and Donna’s beach house
and became one of the gang over the next three
seasons. Handcuff s and a sex tape marked the
beginning of an aff air with David in season 5,
before she settled down with true love Steve in
season 6. For Canadian actress Kathleen Rob-
ertson, her stint on the show was eye-opening.
Practically overnight she went from being a
“Hamilton, Ont., girl driving a Geo Prism” to
“having a bodyguard and dealing with death
threats,” she once said. Since leaving in 1997,
Robertson, who is married to producer Chris
Cowles and has two children, has remained in
the TV spotlight; she’s currently costarring with
William Baldwin on Netfl ix’s Northern Rescue.
