CUT AND PA ST E

This year is the 150th anniversary of Henri Matisse’s birth. To mark

the occasion, MuralsWallpaper has launched the ‘Naive Shapes’

collection, which references the artist’s later work. When bad health

prevented Matisse from painting in the traditional sense, he began

creating pictures using paper cut-outs, and it’s this method that has

inspired the wallpaper’s abstract, playful designs. ‘Cutout Pastel’,

£36 per square metre (muralswallpaper.co.uk).

IN STITCHES
A trio of new rugs by Yael
Mer and Shay Alkalay
of London-based studio
Raw Edges evokes the
messy reverse of a stitched
textile. Each design in the
‘Backstitch’ collection
reflects a different stage
in the creation of a piece
of embroidery: there’s
‘Calm’, with its oversized
stitch; ‘Busy’, featuring
a denser pattern and
‘Composition’ ( left),
which displays an
abstract house motif.
The goal? To celebrate
the beauty of the mundane
and the unseen. From
£1,284 (gan-rugs.com).

PIPE DREAMS
Balineum has created 65 graphic
new tile patterns using a technique
called tube-lining. Popular during
the Art Deco and Art Nouveau
periods, this method involves
hand-piping clay onto the surface
of a tile to add depth and texture.
Made to order, from £57.60 per
square metre ( balineum.co.uk).
