What type of

yogurt should I buy?

ANSWERED BY LEAH SARRIS, RD, LDN

The key to choosing a yogurt is to focus on
its sugar content. All yogurt contains some
naturally occurring sugars (called lactose),
but many options are also loaded with
added sugar. Your best bet (for your health
and your wallet) is to stick with plain
yogurt that you can sweeten yourself with
fruit, honey, or even jam. As a bonus, you
can also use plain yogurt in savory recipes,
like dips and dressings, or as a topping in
place of sour cream. If the idea of eating
plain yogurt makes you, well, not want to
eat yogurt, opt for sweetened varieties that
use fruit to provide natural sweetness, as
these often have little to no added sugar.

My partner blames me for
having diabetes. What can I do?
ANSWERED BY JOHN ZREBIEC, M.S.W., CDE

Education is a good place to start. Blame often
stems from a lack of understanding about the cause
of diabetes or expecting that simply following all
the rules will keep blood glucose stable. Bring your
partner to your next diabetes medical appointment
so that your doctor or CDE can offer “expert” clar-
ification. When things get off-track, shift to prob-
lem-solving: “Let’s focus on what we are going to
do next, not whose fault it is.” Also try to create an
encouraging support network outside of the rela-
tionship to counterbalance the blame game.
