DAYLIGHT INTO THE BUILDING

Creating vibrant office spaces
The VELUXModular Skylight system were installed
as part of a lighting and ventilation strategy led by
BAM Construction and AHR Architects for the
Ministry of Defence’s new UK Hydrographic Office.
Modularised and prefabricated, the modular
skylights simplified a complex specification for
natural daylight, first-class ventilation, and modern aesthetics in a
central atrium area at the heart of the new development. Minimising
the building’s energy use for both lighting and temperature regulation
was a key concern, which led to the VELUX Modular Skylight system
being agreed as the most suitable product for this specification.

Roofglaze provides daylighting for Mosque
Roofglaze was selected by London Eye
architects Marks Barfield and main contractor
Gilbert Ashe to design, manufacture and
install 63 bespoke Flatglass rooflights for this
outstanding project. These rooflights provide
nearly 300m^2 of natural daylight to the
building year-round, increasing the energy savings that underline the
sustainable, eco-friendly ethos of this development. Prototypes of the
large 7.29m^2 single-pane rooflights undertook rigorous testing at
the BRE (British Research Establishment), proving their Class 1
Non-fragility compliance to CWCT TN66 & TN67.

Senior’s in good shape at new sports complex
The new sports complex at the Solent University in Southampton has been kitted out with a high-performance
aluminium fenestration package from Senior Architectural Systems. Designed by Architecture PLB, the
University’s new sports building offers a range of facilities for both students and the general public. The flagship
scheme features a striking facade design which not only complements both its natural environment and the
style of the neighbouring buildings, but also showcases the attractive slim sightlines offered by Senior’s
aluminium glazing systems. The main tower block is wrapped in perforated veil cladding which is punctuated
by Senior’s thermally-enhanced SPW600 aluminium windows. The effect of the cladding means that during
the day, some windows are concealed while others provide a glimpse of the activity taking place within. At
dusk, with the addition of artificial light, the building is transformed as all the windows become visible. On
the smaller sports hall building, the dark brickwork facade design has been balanced by Senior’s Hybrid timber
aluminium windows which help to flood the interior spaces with natural light.
