M&S is one

of the market’s

biggest fallers in

FTSE bloodbath

SHARES in Marks &
Spencer have now lost
more than a third of their
value since the high street
stalwart announced a tie-up
with delivery firm Ocado in
February.
The FTSE 100 retailer
has fallen more than 34pc
since the partnership
was announced and is
languishing near 10-year
lows after sharp declines
in the past week. M&S
executive Melanie Smith
was named chief executive
of joint venture yesterday.
M&S was one of the
biggest victims of a
bloodbath on the FTSE 100
yesterday, falling 10.2p to
190.7p on a day to forget for
the blue-chip index, which
slid 185.2 points to 7,221.82
as global markets sank.
Tensions were reignited
last week when Mr Trump
announced the United
States would launch a 10pc
tariff on a further $300bn
(£247bn) of Chinese imports
from next month. If the
increase goes ahead, it will
mean in effect that the US
imposes levies on all its
Chinese imports. China
vowed “countermeasures”,
and over the weekend
instructed state-owned
enterprises to prepare to
stop buying US agricultural
products.
The Chinese renminbi
dropped to its lowest level
since 2008 against the US
dollar early yesterday. Its
value broke through the
important 7 to the dollar

floor, which China’s central
bank has spent billions
defending. Mr Trump
quickly accused Beijing of
currency manipulation – a
claim the central bank
chief rejected.
Investors have piled into
perceived safe-haven
options, sending the price of
gold to a six-year high and
shielding some precious
metal miners from the
market malaise. At the other
end of the scale, iron ore
continued its slide. Basic
materials have now dropped
for nine consecutive days.
“The markets are firmly
in risk-off mode,” said one
commentator.
The global share sell-off
meant there were few bright
spots on the London market,
with gold miners
outperforming as most
other stocks took losses.
Fresnillo stood alone at the
top of the FTSE 100
throughout the day, while
NMC Health ended flat. All
other FTSE 100 stocks
closed lower.
The pattern was similar
on the FTSE 250, where
gold and silver mining-
linked Hochschild,
Centamin, Polymetal and
Acacia were all among
climbers. The biggest
mid-cap faller was Intu
Properties, which trickled
downwards as the day went
on, apparently still feeling
the aftershocks from poor
results last week. The retail
landlord is also heavily
Brexit-exposed.
British financial stocks
endured a dire day, with
Hargreaves Lansdown,
Prudential and Schroders
all among the top fallers.
Short-sellers are currently
circling UK fund managers.

SwissRe buys

Quilter unit
SwissRe’s UK business
reAssure has signed a deal
to buy Quilter’s heritage
life and pensions division
for £425m. The news
comes just weeks after
SwissRe pulled plans to
float ReAssure, which is the
UK’s sixth largest life
insurer, on the London
stock exchange, blaming
weak demand from large
institutional investors.

BUSINESS BULLETIN

BBA profit slips

as Europe cools
BBA Aviation posted a 2pc
fall in half-year pre-tax
profits to £150.2m as it
struggled with weakness in
Europe and rising costs.
Revenue at the FTSE 250
firm, which provides
fuelling, ground handling
and passenger services,
climbed 19pc to £1.53bn.
Sales at its Signature unit,
which makes up most of its
business, jumped 23.3pc.

July retail sales

left languishing
Retail sales crept up a
marginal 0.3pc in July,
compared to an increase of
1.6pc in the same month
last year. This was the
lowest figure recorded for
the month of July since the
British Retail Consortium
records began in 1995 and
comes after the worst June
on record. UK retail sales
rose 0.1pc on a like-for-like
basis.

Gold surges to

six-year high
The price of gold climbed
to its highest level in more
than six years yesterday as
investors piled into
perceived safe-haven
options. It jumped more
than 1.5pc to trade around
$1,462 (£1,202) per ounce
after the escalation in the
US-China trade war and
amid Brexit uncertainty.
Gold is traditionally seen as
a safe investment.

737 grounding

knocks Senior
Aerospace engineer Senior
warned its margins would
suffer the rest of the year as
it cuts back on production
of parts for Boeing’s 737
Max, which has been
grounded since March after
two deadly crashes. Boeing
cut production of the jets
from a planned 57 per
month to 42 in mid-April as
the aircraft continues to be
investigated by regulators.

Cloudflare cuts

ties with 8chan
Internet infrastructure firm
Cloudflare has severed ties
with notorious online
forum 8chan after it was
linked to a mass shooting in
El Paso, Texas this
weekend. 8chan was the
target of criticism after a
lengthy racist manifesto,
reportedly left by the man
named by US media outlets
as the shooter, was
discovered on the forum.
