Scoreboard

nament, particularly when it looked

as though England would not make

the last four. He was then a central

player in the final, batting bril-

liantly with Ben Stokes in both the

England run chase and super over,

before completing the match-win-

ning run-out with the scores tied.

But the stress of the final was im-

mense. After he was dismissed in

England’s run chase, he felt he had

blown it for his team and admitted

thumping the physio’s table in frus-

tration and said: “Every dot ball I

kicked something.”

He had only a few minutes to pre-

pare for batting in the super over,

before keeping his cool to complete

the run-out of Martin Guptill. He

also moved house a few days later.

He told the Mail on Sunday:

“What was scaring me was if we

lost, I didn’t know how I’d play
cricket again. This was such a once-
in-a-lifetime opportunity. It felt like
destiny and I was thinking, ‘If it
doesn’t happen, I will have no moti-
vation to pick up a cricket bat for a
very long time’. ”
Lifting themselves to play against
Australia and cope with the pres-
sure of an Ashes series facing the
world’s best seam attack was going
to take an immense mental effort.
Buttler has scored one hundred
in 33 Test innings and his footwork
was nowhere when he was bowled
on the final day at Edgbaston. He
was stood down as vice-captain of
the Test team this week, which may
help him concentrate on his batting
in the longer term. England will be
hoping the nine-day gap between
Tests helps him clear his mind.

Root said. “We’ve got to make sure
we take in all the information about
how we want to approach the next
game and make a call from there.”
Root gave Moeen solid support,
even hinting that his place was safe
for Lord’s, but when asked directly
if he would play in the next match
the captain was more vague. “We’ve
got to make sure we’re very clear
about how we approach the next
game and not make too many emo-
tional decisions.
“Moeen didn’t have his best day
yesterday [Sunday]. With Mo,
you’ve got to remember how
threatening he can be and what an
asset he has been to this team in the
past. Whenever written off before,
he generally comes back stronger,
especially in English conditions.
I’m sure he’ll dust himself down

and make sure he’s in a good head
space going into Lord’s.”
Archer plays for Sussex seconds
today in a three-day game against
Gloucestershire, his first red-ball
match since last season, and it is
crucial that he proves his fitness by
bowling a long spell.
Anderson had another scan on
his right calf and is expected to be
ruled out until the fourth Test. Root
denied they gambled on his fitness.
“He passed every medical testing.
He was fit to play,” he said. “It’s one
of those freak scenarios where he
pulled up – because it’s the same
calf, we’re not sure whether it’s a
slightly different injury.
“But it’s an easy thing to look
back on and say we’d have done
things differently. It was a unani-
mous decision for him to play.”

Denly is a more pressing con-
cern. At 33, time is not on his side
and England need to decide how
many matches they can give him.
He could be left out at Lord’s for
Sam Curran. Stokes could move to
four, with Curran slotting in lower
down and giving Joe Root a left-arm
option with the ball.
Three changes would be accept-
able at Lord’s, with Jack Leach in
contention to replace Moeen Ali,
and Jofra Archer for the injured
James Anderson. Four would look
like panic, which is not England’s
style and not the way Ed Smith
would want to approach his first
Ashes series as national selector.
“It’s very easy to make emotional
decisions right now. We’re in a for-
tunate position where there’s a long
time between these two Tests,”
