Heavy Duty – July-August 2019

(Romina) #1

from the brakes. A number of blokes wore some
significant holes in various bikes but there was
no hint that the tyres were anything but up to the
job. In fact, I know I would not have punted any
of the Harleys I rode that hard, on stock rubber. It
could have been messy. Worth noting was the Gold
Wing which was hurled around like a monstous
battleship and amazed everyone with how well it
coped. At the end of the session no tyres showed
signs of wear or overheating, even on the ‘Wing!
Later, a section of the track was given a good
soaking and we rode a course through witches hats
to reinforce Metzeler’s claim of greatly enhanced
wet-weather performance. Given that I am a sook
on wet surfaces I can’t comment but everyone
seemed to be zooming through pretty well. So I’m
taking their claim as a given.
There’s little doubt that the Cruisetec has raised
the bar in terms of replacement tyre choice. In
the past the choice was simpler but now, not so
much. I see these tyres as an aspirational buy, a
product you choose because you know there will
be a tangible benefit. Sort of like upgrading your
exhaust or dynotuning the motor. Well, this is like
dynotuning your chassis.
Overall, I was greatly impressed with the Cruisetec
range. I’m sure they won’t be cheap but nothing
decent ever is. Metzeler have a comprehensive
fitment range for virtually all model H-Ds and
Indian/Victorys and many other brands as well.
We are fitting a set to our HEAVY DUTY 117 Street
Glide and will update over the next few issues. HD
