Christine: “You used to be a
better liar.”
Phyllis: “I was just kidding.
I’d like to buy you a cup of
coffee.”
Christine: “I’ll pass.”
Phyllis: “Afraid I’ll poison
you?”
Christine: “That would be
more subtle than running me
over with a car.”
On her wedding day to

ago (“Bug!”). Even if you
didn’t watch Y&R in the
’90s, you get that these two
weren’t braiding each other’s
hair back then. And while
the recast Adam is hateful,
they’ve done a good job unit-
ing our favorite vets against
him.
Michael (deleting incrimi-
nating pics off Kevin’s
phone): “Not brilliant. The
opposite of brilliant.”
Kevin (jumping on his back
to stop him): “I hate you so
much right now!”

■ Soaps have introduced a
ton of new characters lately,
but they’re not getting the
same attention as the vets.
You have to play newbies
and recasts with faves and tell
their story on-screen if you
want to hook us.
■ Look at how Y&R is strug-
gling with the Rosales family.
Despite the high-octane addi-
tion of Eva La Rue as Lola
and Rey’s mother, Celeste,
the scenes fall flat because the
action still involves stuff that
happened off-screen.
Rey: “Mom’s been seeing
Dad.”
Lola: “She’s been lying to us
all these years? He ruined our
family and now he’s trying to
do it again!”
Why would we care about
what happened years ago to
Lola’s parents? Or which of
her unknown family mem-
bers will attend her wedding?
Did they learn nothing from
the mistake of dropping
Arturo, Rey, Mia and Lola
into the action with a back-
story that already happened
“in Miami”? Even a beloved
soap vet can’t carry a story

about events we didn’t see
with people we don’t know.
Celeste (to Lola): “Wounds
heal.”
Is she referring to Lola’s
boyfriend giving her a bad
purse or her dad leaving?
Either way, I don’t care.
Unless the dad is being
played by A Martinez, I’ll
pass. (Too many new peo-
ple!) While we’re at it, all that

either.
Lola (to Theo): “What exactly
went on in Kyle’s life when
he was in New York City?”
Seriously: Play newbie
action on-screen with people
we know.
Like they’ve been doing
with Michelle Stafford’s
return as Phyllis. How genius
was that snarkfest between
her and Christine, two legacy
characters who first shared
scenes together in 1994?
Phyllis: “Cricket! So great to
see you.”

You have to play newbies and
recasts with faves.
