BEST DOMESTIC DESIGN
Coffee mill, by Michael Anastassiades,
for Carl Auböck and Sigmar London

Few cosmetics brands take the bare beauty
essentials as seriously as fledgling German
brand Less. Its skincare range comprises just
three products: two face oils and a millennia-
old Moroccan washing clay called ghassoul.
Unnecessary additives are eschewed in
favour of a select batch of five raw plant oils,
while the similarly economical packaging,
featuring the brand’s slim minus logo, is
devised by founder David Scherf. The clay
can also be stored in a container designed for
Less by Belgian architect Vincent Van
Duysen. Less, in this case, is certainly more.

Regular coffee drinker Michael
Anastassiades was determined to design
a coffee mill, so he turned to Carl Auböck
for help. The pair had already joined
forces, on a pepper mill, and like the
previous design, this new piece features
Anastassiades’ subtle lines and Carl
Auböck’s exquisite craftsmanship. The mill
is crafted from a solid piece of brass or
copper, with a tube concealing the complex
mechanism inside. Another small cylinder,
placed asymmetrically, acts as a handle.
