Congratulations to the class of 2019! Some of you
may be ready for college, but if you are like I was,
not so much. I decided to attend college out of
state—four-hundred miles away from home, with-
out my parents, not knowing who I was rooming
with or if I would make friends, which really wor-
ried me. But after my first year, I don’t know what
I was worried about.
Nonetheless, I am not going to lie and say it was
easy. I switched my major twice. After extensive
consideration, I finally discovered a course of
study that I love. This is what makes college great.
You may have an idea of what you want to study,
but that might change, and that change is not un-
common. Your first year is for experimenting with
different options, finding your interests, and most
importantly learning to understand yourself.
I went into college planning to become an ele-
mentary school teacher. That has changed. I have
decided to study Speech and Hearing Science. If
you know me, even a little, you would know that
it was not a subject I would ever have been like-
ly to pursue. Just hearing myself tell people my
major still shocks me a little. When I scheduled
my classes at the beginning of the year, a course
called “Orient to Ed Exceptional Child” intrigued
me. To you, that might just look like five words,
but that class opened my eyes to a subject I would
