ILLI Heinz, the
New Zealand-
born scrum-
half, is set for
his England
debut against Wales on
Sunday as Eddie Jones
gives his World Cup bolters
one shot to impress.
The 32-year-old Gloucester No 9
has been included in a 33-man
group for the Twickenham Test
as one of two scrum-halves, along
with first choice Ben Youngs.
With Saracens’ Ben Spencer, 27,
having been dropped for
the game, Heinz is sure to
play against Warren Gatland’s
side as he tries to stake a
last-gasp claim for a seat on the
plane to Japan.
Heinz is one of five uncapped
players who will surely feature in
the make-or-break game on
Sunday — the day before England
finalise their 31-man squad for
the World Cup — alongside utility
back Ruaridh McConnochie,
flanker Lewis Ludlam, hooker
Jack Singleton and centre
Joe Marchant.
Ben Te’o and Mike Brown were,
like Spencer, sent back to their
clubs and will not feature this
weekend. Sportsmail understands
Mako Vunipola will not be consid-
ered for selection as he recovers
from a hamstring injury.
That means Joe Marler will play
his first Test in 14 months, having
reversed his retirement this sum-
mer. Jones said: ‘Players excluded
from being involved in this camp
are naturally disappointed but
may get another opportunity so
they must be ready.
‘By the time we fly out on
September 8 we will be ready to
win the Rugby World Cup. We are
not there yet but we have four
games to get ready.’
It is believed Te’o, Brown and
Spencer’s omissions from the
squad are not terminal for their
World Cup chances, but with this
Wales match being the last chance
Jones has to see players
play before he selects his final
squad, uncertainty over their
inclusion reigns.
Te’o is sure to be included if fit,
due to the lack of other options
at inside centre, and Spencer’s
fate will largely rest on Heinz’s
performance — as England look
set to bring just two scrum-halves
to Japan — but for Brown the
move looks ominous.
If Bath back McConnochie, who
won Olympic silver with the GB
sevens squad in 2016, impresses
on Sunday he could force his way
into the 31, especially as Jack
Nowell is still in rehabilitation.
Ludlam is in a similar situation,
due to the ongoing concerns
around flanker Brad Shields —
who injured his foot in training
and may not play at all before
England fly to Japan. Singleton is
likely to make the final cut, if
England take three hookers, as
former captain Dylan Hartley is
not yet ready for a return, having
been out with a knee injury
since December.
And with Jones likely to take
four out-and-out centres to the
World Cup, Harlequins flyer
Marchant, 23, will struggle to
force his way past Manu Tuilagi,
Henry Slade, Jonathan Joseph
and Te’o if they are all fit.
Danny Cipriani, who was axed
last month, was not recalled
so now has no chance of
being included — barring an
injury crisis.

BRITAIN’S biggest women-only
tennis event is set to be hugely
downgraded as part of a
reshuffle of the pre-Wimbledon
grass-court calendar. In a bid to
stem losses that have run into
millions over recent years, the
Nature Valley Classic at
Birmingham’s Priory Club will
see its prize money and status
dramatically reduced. The
event in Edgbaston has
struggled to attract
commensurate crowds and
sponsors since being elevated
to ‘Premier’ level on the WTA
Tour in 2014. According to
highly placed sources in the
game, it will revert to the
‘International’ tier in the next
two years, meaning that its
purse will go down from
$1million (£830,000) to just
$250,000 (£208,000) — possibly
as soon as next year. A new
higher-tier event is expected
to replace it in Germany —
probably Berlin, although
Hamburg has been mentioned
— with investment from
Wimbledon as it tries to protect
struggling grass-court events.
The Birmingham tournament
costs the LTA, who declined to
comment, well over £500,000
annually to maintain.
