provides much needed sustenance and the varied workshops
available were certainly tempting as an excuse to sit and sew
for a while, perhaps learning a new technique. There were
many traders, some regulars had retired but newer stands
had taken their place and there were several quilt displays
that I don’t have room to show you here. We have covered
the 2019 Journal Quilt Challenge already but there was some
stunning feature displays from Monica Wutzl with ‘Stitched
Memories’, Abigail Sheridan de Graaff with ‘From Beginner to
Educator’ and a selection of quilts based on the 1718 Coverlet
to name a few. But let’s go back to the quilts.

We now turn to the Small Wall Hanging Awards with Natalie
Taylor winning fi rst place with ‘Rice and Fizz’ which was
inspired by vines growing for prosecco and the rice terraces
in Thailand. ‘Past Impressions’ by Deborah Carter won second
prize and also collected the Beginner Quilter Award, welcome
to the fold Deborah! Third place went to Jill Exell for her work
‘The Dragonfl y Returns’. Jeanette Orr was also successful with
her ‘The Dragonfl y’ winning the Myra Coles Award for Machine
Appliqué and being Jane Petty’s Judge's Choice. This was
quite a spectacle, a stained glass eff ect created with machine
appliquéd pieces on a black background. Jeanette also won
the Cot Quilt Award for her ‘Gabrielle’s Quilt’ which was a
complete contrast to the bright dragonfl y. A set of diff erent
techniques displaying how adaptable Jeanette is. A delicate

There are a few awards that I haven’t mentioned. The fi rst
of these is the Hubert and Kathleen Grose Memorial Cup
for My First Bed Quilt which was won by Michael Reynolds
for his ‘Arctic Churn’. His fi rst ever quilt using a Churn Dash
block in a contemporary design inspired by Lori Miller and
EQ8. ‘Midnight Fanfare’ by Helen Burnham was awarded
the Christine Porter Award for Machine Quilting along with

Beatrix Potter alphabet, embroidered andquilted on her
domestic sewing machine.
