Ruby Celebration Exhibition

To celebrate their 40th anniversary, The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles has planned many activities throughout 2019. From
a new collection of commissioned quilts ‘Spotlight @40’ to a commemorative book ‘Forty - the Evolution of a Collection’. One of
the most exciting is a special display at the Festival of Quilts in August celebrating four decades of collecting British quilts which
features quilts gathered throughout the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s. One of these, donated to the Guild in 1992, was made by Mrs
Mills of Crook, near Durham, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne in 1887. Known
as the ‘Jubilee Quilt’ it is a wonder of silks, velvets and embroidery typical of the late Victorian period. It was not made by the
donor’s family, but was given to the owner’s grandfather, William Machell, in lieu of rent.
