Jail books are
page burners
CRIMINALS have been
sneaking drugs into a jail
inside the pages of books
donated to the library.
Psychoactive drugs in
liquid form, such as Spice,
can be soaked into the
paper and smoked by cons.
A source at HMP
Berwyn in North Wales
said it seemed “a relatively
simply way” for inmates to
get their hands on drugs.
Mail is now tested and
the Independent Moni-
toring Board said the jail’s
actions had “significantly
reduced” drug availability.
Hungry gull in
520 - mile dash
BRITAIN’S fastest seagull
travelled 520 miles from
the Channel Islands to
Spain in just seven days.
The lesser black-backed
gull sped to Ares beach in
A Coruna to feed.
It was ringed in 2016 in
the Channel Islands and
seen there again during
recordings on July 17.
A week later the bird
was spotted on Ares beach.
Alderney Bird Observa-
tory warden John Horton
said: “It would have known
there was a safe place with
plenty to eat there.”
