FANS SHOULD
NOT FEAR VAR
FORMER ref Neil Swarbrick says
fans should not fear lengthy
delays to Premier League
games when VAR is
introduced.
The women’s World
Cup was marred by VAR
delays, but Swarbrick
(right) said: “We’re setting a very
high bar as to when we intervene
so it is less likely there will be
stoppages of significant length.”
STERLING SKIPS ROLE
BY DAVID McDONNELL
RAHEEM STERLING has
ruled himself out of the
captain’s role at
Manchester City.
Vincent Kompany’s
departure after 11
successful years has left
City needing to appoint a
new skipper – but Sterling
(right) feels there are more
worthy candidates than
him to wear the armband.
He said the likes of David
Silva, who has taken on the
role most during City’s
pre-season tour, Kevin De
Bruyne, Fernandinho and
Sergio Aguero are ahead of
him in the captaincy
pecking order.
“It’s not something that
I’m fussed about really,”
said Sterling.
“We’ve got such a lot of
good candidates here.”

STEVE BRUCE says he is no
“dinosaur” boss and will win
over disgruntled Newcastle
fans.
The Toon boss says he has loved
his first week on the training
ground and believes fans can be
confident owner Mike Ashley is
working hard to back him in the
transfer market with more signings.
Bruce’s appointment got a muted
reaction a fortnight ago from a
section of Geordie faithful. He has
managed more than 900 games at
10 clubs over 20 years and has been
hurt at being branded old-
people in it. I am convinced, first
game, they will be behind us.
“I know I am not everyone’s cup
of tea but I have done OK in the last
20 years and my experience will be
important. I could have turned it
down and not had a go.”
Bruce has now managed bitter
rivals in Birmingham, Sheffield and
the North East and said: “My dad
used to say I am mad full stop. It is
just the way it has worked out. How
fashioned by critics. Bruce said: “I
have to win over the support and
challenge for the cups with my
team here. I get labelled with this
dinosaur thing. We played three at
the back at Palace 20 years ago. I
was one of the first.
“But after doing the job so long
you get labelled with old school or
dinosaur. There is nothing wrong
with old school but of course I
embrace the whole of what the job
has become.”
Amid talks of boycotts by fans,
who could stay away from the
opener against Arsenal, Bruce said:
“It can be blown out of proportion.
I saw a demo the other day with 12
