THE social care crisis is
costing the taxpayer nearly
£23billion a year as more
people have to stop work
to look after a loved one.
An estimated 2.6 million
people have quit jobs to
care for someone in need,
due to gaps in services.
That has cost the nation
£8.8billion in income tax
based on average wage
levels, analysis by care
agency Helpd revealed.
About £14billion in
National Insurance
contributions from
employees and employers
is also being lost.
Co-founder Dr Neil
Parrett said: “Many people
giving up their jobs are in
the prime of their careers.
This is having an impact
on the public purse.”

MORE than 200,000 chil-
dren as young as 11 may
have been groomed online,
the NSPCC has found.
The charity said one in
25 secondary school pupils
aged 11 to 17 had received,
sent or been asked to send
sexual content to an adult.
The most frequent
approaches were made
using Snapchat, Facebook
and Facebook Messenger.
Twitter and games
platform Twitch were next,
followed by contact on
Instagram and WhatsApp.
Children who responded
to an approach on social
media were then encour-
aged to move to encrypted
messaging or live video.
NSPCC chief Peter Wan -
less warned: “The scale of
risk on social networks
cannot be ignored.”

hearing that because Miss Grice did not tell
PC Godfrey she had been in a relationship
with Lane, he considered her dishonest.
And he recommended no further action
be taken against Lane. Mr Berry said:
“There was no appreciation that a young
woman in a sexual relationship with a
man could be vulnerable.”
Miss Grice, of Portslade, near
Brighton, first reported Lane
for stalking and harassment in
February 2016. In March 2016,
she called police after a scuffle
with Lane in the street.
PC Godfrey interviewed Miss
Grice and Lane. Lane told him it
was a domestic argument. PC
Godfrey did not ask Miss Grice about
Lane’s claim, as he should have done.
On August 25, 2016 Miss Grice was found
dead at home. Her throat had been slit.
The Independent Office for Police
Conduct investigated. Another officer, PC
Jon Barry Mills, was found guilty of gross
misconduct in May. Mr Godfrey has
retired from the force, with a police
pension. He is contesting the charges.
Earlier, Shana’s parents, Sharon
Grice and Richard Green, said: “A
young girl went to [police] for
protection and ended up murdered
by the very person she’d asked the
police to protect her from. [She] was
treated like a criminal.”

Victim reported her killer for
stalking but cops let him go
A TEEN who was killed by her ex was
accused of “wasting police time” when
she told officers he was stalking and
harassing her, a hearing was told.
Shana Grice, 19, reported Michael Lane
to police five times in six months. But when
Sussex Police PC Trevor Godfrey found out
she had been in a relationship with Lane,
he warned her about wasting officers’ time.
Five months later, Lane murdered her.
Mr Godfrey yesterday appeared before a
disciplinary hearing in Lewes, East Sussex,
to answer charges of gross misconduct.
The panel hear he did not adequately
investigate allegations of harassment and
stalking made by Miss Grice. And he failed
to treat Miss Grice as an abuse victim.
