CONTROL THE
FLASH COUNT
Most flashguns
enable you to set two
stroboscopic controls.
The Hz (Hertz) setting
controls flashes per
second, and the flash
count determines the
total number of flashes.
With flash count 10 at
8Hz here, we’ll get 10
bursts over 0.8 seconds.

POSITION
THE LIGHT
By placing the light
behind the subject and
to one side, you can
illuminate the edge
of the dancer’s figure,
which enables you to
emphasize her shape,
while still leaving the
shadow areas you need
to keep the effect from
looking too muddled.

SET THE
EXPOSURE
Here’s a good starting
point for your exposure.
Set to Manual exposure,
with a shutter speed
of around 1-1.5 sec, an
aperture of f/11 and ISO
100, then take a couple
of test shots. If the
background is too bright,
close down the aperture
or lower the ISO.
