AsimpleconcoctionofBelvederevodka,
limeandsodawateronabedoffresh
granadilla pulp. Delicious and fresh and
packsapunch.Idrankitinaboutthree
bigsips.Gloriousexuberance.Thatmink
isnowdiscarded,lyinginawetpuddle
on the floor, and you’re ready to shimmy
and rumble!
Itoppedthefirstroundwithadrink
calledaChuckBerry’sMojo.Grapefruit
and lime juice with lots of Ciroc vodka


oniceandfinishedwithfreshlayered
strawberries.Sharp,sweetandstrong,
with some chewy bits. Like a fruit salad
for Charles Bukowski.

teetotallers, The Chairman naturally
offersaselectionofwhattheycall
mocktails–youguessedit,alcohol-free
cocktails. I selected the Ginger Magic,
becauseitwasatthetopofthelistand
Iwasrollingprettyfastandlooseafter
the first three drinks. Cranberry juice
with fresh limes and ginger and topped
up with tonic water to give it a grown-
upflavour.Itwassurprisinglydelicious
and quite refreshing. I know because
Idrankit.Thebasicproblemwitha
mocktail in Durban is that you invariably
drinkittoofast,Imeanit’shot,you’re
thirsty and what’s holding you back?
