What’s being caught?
Anglers catching tench, mostly
3-5 lb, fishing early, along with a
few bream and carp.
Tactics? It’s a good idea to
rake a swim the night before,
bait up, then fish casters over
groundbait on a pole to the far
bank rushes for the tench.


Royal Military Canal
Where? Bilsington Bridge to
Giggers Green Bridge, Kent.

What’s being caught? Tench
showing, along with bream,
roach and perch. There are also
some very big carp, pike and
eels through this three-mile
stretch.
Tactics? Pole close to marginal
or far bank lilies best for the
tench, with casters and corn
over groundbait working well.
Fish early or late.


STILLWATERS
Ardingly Reservoir
Where? The Lodge, Ardingly,
West Sussex, RH17 6SQ. Day
tickets £11 from the lodge or
£15 on the bank. New members
day season tickets £135; day/
night and pike £290.

What’s being caught? Bream
fishing has been superb, with
fish into doubles reported,
along with a few tench that go to
over 10 lb and plenty of roach,
skimmers, hybrids and perch.
Tactics? For the bream, feeder
rules, heavy baiting with
groundbait recommended,
using casters or worms on the
hook. Tench also fall to feeder
closer in, but they can be caught
on a float with corn, worms and
casters, or try a waggler with
sprayed maggots for mixed
bags of perch, skimmers, roach
and hybrids.


Johnsons Lake
Where? Station Road, Milford,

What’s being caught? The first
few weeks of the new season
have produced crucians to 3 lb
8 oz, carp of 30 lb-plus and
tench to over 7 lb, along with
rudd close to 2 lb.
Tactics? Flatbed feeder and
plastic best for the crucians and
tench, or helicopter rigs and
maggots for the rudd, or carp on
20 mm boilies.

Lake John Fishery
Where? Aimes Green,
Galley Hill, Waltham Abbey,
Essex, EN9 2BJ. Day tickets £10

What’s being caught? Both
lakes classed as mixed fisheries
and fishing really well, with
match weights often over 100 lb.
Some big carp in the Top Lake.
Tactics? The Bottom Lake
lends itself to pole, most anglers
fishing different lines, including
one at 14 m, one at 6 m and
another down the edge, 6 mm
expander pellets best. Big
boilies will sort out the bigger
carp in the Top Lake.

Nash Royston Lakes
Where? Royston, Hertfordshire,
SG8 6RA. Five-year

What’s being caught? Both
lakes fishing well, with lots of
carp to well over 20 lb, the pick

of the bunch being a low-30
ghostie mirror to Steven Smith.
Tactics? Best bait for the carp
is a Scopex Squid boilie fished
snowman style with a small,
white pop-up on a stiff hinge rig.

Oakley Road Fishery
Where? Bromley, Kent, BR2
8HQ. Day tickets £10 one rod;
£12 two rods. Tel: 07414 941774.
What’s being caught? The
bigger of the two lakes is
producing carp, mainly singles
and doubles, but with an outside
chance of a 20. 50 lb bags of
bream, tench to 5 lb and 30 lb of
skimmers not uncommon.
Tactics? Stringers and PVA
bags with small, bright,
hair-rigged boilies for the carp,
or feeder, waggler or pole with
maggots or casters for mixed
bags, including bigger tench
and bream.

Two-and-a-half-year-old
Henry Bird was “over the
moon” when he landed his
first common carp, this
10 lb 6 oz fish, with help
from his dad, Wayne, after it
took floating bread crust in
the margins at this
three-lake fishery.
