Western Art Collector – August 2019

(nextflipdebug2) #1
pieces include Freedom from the Storm, which features a
massive thunderhead that seems to be breaking behind three
figures and a purple ridge, and Flat Land, which exemplifies
the artist’s interest in creating dimension from within flat
renderings of landscapes and desert scenes.
The show is coming at an exciting time for the young
painter: he just recently finished a second pressing of his
book Desert Survey, which sold out in its first printing;
he’s undertaken new three-dimensional works in metal; he
just put the finishing touches on a new serigraph print (“It’s
mind-blowing seeing how much work goes into those,” he
says); and his family is in the middle of a move, which may
include a new studio down the road. Oh, and his wife is
expecting their second child. Needless to say, Hagege is
thrilled to have things to work on.
“I love keeping busy on multiple levels. It’s fun for me
to expand outward. While I love painting, I don’t have to
strictly do only paintings,” he says. “There is art wherever
you choose to make it.”
His show at Gerald Peters Gallery will continue through
September 28.
