Western mysteries

W

hen we reached out to painter Terry
Gardner he was on his cellphone
and he had to hop in his truck
and travel to get a good signal. “This is what
happens when you’re on a ranch, I guess,” he
says. He was gathering reference material on
the Chico Basin Ranch in Colorado. “It’s a big
operation, 100,000 acres. They’re about to do
some intense separating of the bulls, branding
some of the heifers and moving some cattle. I’ll
try to draw on location where I can, or do some
photography, to take back to the studio.”
This is how Gardner likes to work: out with
the cowboys and cattle, getting his hands a
little dirty, and his clothes a little dusty. That
closeness to his subjects helps inform his work,
and it will be on view at his new show, Western
Mysteries, Intimate Views, opening August 7 at
Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, Colorado. The
show will present Gardner’s Western paintings
that are colored so lightly that they almost look
like monochromatic images. The key to his
distinct look is the gray paint that he mixes into
all his colors to achieve the mood and tone that
speaks directly to him.
