MISSING
https://www.sbs.com.au/missing/
This interactive documentary follows the true
crime story of the abduction of Wendy Jane
Pfeiffer, a young girl snatched from Adelaide Hills,
Australia in 1966. Produced by television network
SBS, Missing typifies the potency of immersive
browser-based storytelling.
Over six chapters, visitors join the search
for Pfeiffer, led by the legendary tracking
skills of Aboriginal natives. The experience is
cleverly rendered using only still re-enactment
photography, along with the mapping of location
shots onto WebGL scenes. This creates a 3D journey
into bush land and the scouring of Polaroids for
clues that once clicked, move the story forwards.
Full-screen mode can be toggled for heightened
effect, while the experience has been optimised for
viewing on mobile devices with equal impact.
The most jaw-dropping technical feature,
however, must be how the story pace can be
dictated by mouse or touch-based controls.
Progression can not only be nudged forwards but
more usefully backwards to recap details maybe
missed, with a seamlessness that never breaks the
narrative tension.
