QuickFACTS
Sri Lanka is an island country located
in the Indian Ocean. You can find it at
the southern tip of India. Sri Lanka is a
popular tourist destination because
it is surrounded by many amazing
beaches and it is also popular with
animal-lovers everywhere, because
it is home to elephants, leopards
and rare species of birds. The official
currency of Sri Lanka is the Rupee
and languages commonly spoken
include Sinhala, Tamil and English.
FantasticFOODS
The cuisine in Sri Lanka is quite similar
to its neighbours, India, but the island
certainly does put their own spin on
things. Rice and curry are staples,
but fish ambul thiyal is a much-loved,
iconic curry of the area. Street food is
also a fun experience for tourists. Kottu
is a snack that looks like fried rice, but
is actually made up of small pieces of
cut up roti - a type of crispy flatbread -
and served with curry sauce. Yum!
SightsTO SEE
Sri Lanka is a country full of ancient attractions and
beautiful scenery. Sigiriya is a must-do if you go,
because you’ll get to experience one of the most
impressive rock formations in the world. Formed by
dried magma from an extinct volcano, this fortress
is surrounded by pretty gardens, ponds and
fountains, too. You can also go on safari at Yala
National Park, where you just might see a leopard
or crocodile in the wild. How cool is that?
In Sri Lanka, education is free and offered to
students from the age of five. The system is split
into primary, junior secondary and secondary.
Usually, the school week runs from Monday to
Friday and class begins bright and early at
7.30am. Because of this start time, class is
wrapped up by 1.30pm. After school is finished,
students may stay back to participate in various
clubs, including singing and languages.
