LEADERS
Seattle Mariners infielder Tim
Beckhamhas been suspended 80
games as part of baseball’s joint
drug agreement after testing pos-
itive for stanozolol, a banned per-
formance enhancer, Major League
Baseball announced Tuesday.
In a statement released
through the players association,
Beckham said he took a product
from a “trusted source, who had
advised it was safe to take. Regret-
tably, the product was tainted.”
Beckham said an arbitrator up-
held the suspension.
He was hitting .237 with 15 home
runs and 47 RBIs in 88 games.
Etc.
Reliever Brandon Kintzlerwas
placed on the 10-day injured list by
the Chicago Cubs because of in-
flammation of a chest muscle. He is
2-1 with a 2.33 ERA. ... Second base-
man Joe Panikwas designated for
assignment by the San Francisco
Giants. He was batting .235 in 103
