The CW has a new anthology series inspired by the viral fan fic-
tion of two-sentence horror stories. Each episode of “Two Sentence
Horror Stories” will include a scary tale based on technological, en-
vironmental, and social issues. Executive produced by Vera Miao,
the series is eight half-hour episodes, beginning Thursday at 9 p.m.
Here are someof the two-sentence horror stories I found online:
RI begin tucking him into bed and he tells me, “Daddy check for
monsters under my bed.” I look underneath for his amusement and
see him, another him, under the bed, staringbackat me quivering
and whispering, “Daddy there’s somebody on my bed.”
RI can’t move,breathe, speakor hearand it’s so darkall the
time.If I knew it would be this lonely, I would have beencremated
instead.
RThere was a picture in my phone of me sleeping. I live alone.
RI just saw my reflection blink.
RMy wife just ran in to ask me if I was okay because she could
hearmy terrible coughing fit fromacross the house. I wasn’t
coughing.
RYesterday my parentstold me I was too old for an imaginary
friend and that I had to let her go. They found her bodythis morn-
ing.
RMy daughter won’t stop crying and screamingin the middle of
the night. I visit her grave and ask her to stop, but it doesn’t help.
RI awoke to the sound of the baby monitor crackling with a
voice comforting my firstborn child. As I adjusted to a new posi-
tion, my arm brushed against my wife, sleeping next to me.

Q.My mother conceivedbothmy brother and me usinga spermdonor. This information was never kept from us, and my motherhas spoken openlyabout it throughout our lives. My stepdad adopted us, making us his legal children. Recently, I was discussing takingan ancestry test and my motherrevealed to me that her sister, my aunt “Grace” (and uncle) had trouble conceiving and that my older cousin,“Allie,” is also a sperm donorchild. My aunt and uncle, however, have not disclosed this information to Allie. My uncle was the sourceof infertility, and did not want her to know(he has some ego issues). This is apparentlya big secret that no- body knows about (outside of my mom, aunt, and uncle). My momasked me not to publiclypost about my ancestry test, lest my cousin get curious and also want to take one, outing her parents. I am deeply uncomfortable with this; as a fellow sperm donor child I feel an obli- gation to tell her, but I also am concerned aboutdestroyingmy relationship with my aunt and uncle. What to do? CONCERNEDCOUSIN A.If your mother had truly wanted to keep this sperm-donorinformation secret, she wouldn’t have told you. But she did tell you, and now she is (basically) setting this family secret at your feet, and makingyou responsible for keeping it. I’m going to assumethat you are an adult. Of course,your mothercan ask you not to post publicly about yourDNA an-

cestry test journey, but yourDNA is your business and you have the right to handle this disclosure the way you wantto. Your ancestry testing has created a ticking clock, however. Tell your mother, “I don’t wantto bury my own information in order to keep this family secret. I hope you’ll encourage Aunt ‘Grace’ to tell ‘Allie’ the truth.” Your mother should tell her sister, “My kids are getting their DNA tested. Natural- ly, they are pretty excitedabout this and they will sharethis informationwith friendsand family. Allie is going to learn the truth of her DNA at somepoint, but you should be the person to tell her. We are all hereto support all of you if you need it.” Your parentsseemto have handledthe truth about your DNA very well. It’s too bad your aunt and uncledidn’tdo likewise.

Q.Two of our neighborshave fire pits that they use, sitting outside to enjoy the ambi- ance in the evening. Unfortunately, they tendto do this when it is already very warm. In the evenings we openour windows to begin cooling downour home. As soon as the air begins movingin our house, the smell of smoke starts to fill our home. We also have another neighbor that us- es charcoal for barbecue. We get about 20 minutes of the smell of lighter fluidand smoke while it’s warmingup. We don’t think it is fair that we have to keep our windows closed. The smoke makes us coughand leaves a bad odor in our home.

A.According to information on your local fire department’s website, there is an ordi- nanceagainst “openburning” in yourar- ea. You should contact the fire department to ask if fire pits qualify. Your town(RedwoodCity) lies in very close proximity to the massive area in Cali- fornia that burned last year during the his- toricCampFire,which killed85 people, injured three firefightersand burned more than 10,000 structures. Giventhe extremerisk, it seemsobvi- ous that it is a terrible idea to burn any- thing outside that might send up sparks. You shouldask theseneighbors if they wouldconsiderswitchingto usinggas. The safety risk to all of your homes should override the awkwardness of the ask.

Q.“No Good Options” reported beingun- comfortablereceiving “the male gaze” and compliments from men in public. Giveme a break. So nowmen can’t compliment women? Nice. A brownboobyhitcheda rideon a Provincetownwhale-watch boat two dif- ferent days recently. A black-headedgull has beenat Mono- moy National Wildlife Refuge, where oth- er sightings includeda brant, a Northern pintail, 13 gadwall, a pied-billed grebe, a sora, 3,200semipalmated sandpipers, 25,000commonterns,a glossy ibis, and

an American redstart. A royaltern and an Icelandgull were noted on a boat trip out of Chatham Har- bor on July 26, along with 257 Wilson’s storm-petrels, 6 Cory’s shearwaters, 69 great shearwaters, 16 sooty shearwaters, and one Manx shearwater. Shorebirds roosting on a section of MonomoyNationalWildlifeRefuge in Chatham included 210 whimbrel,8 Hud- soniangodwits, one marbled godwit, 189 red knots, 585 sanderlings, 1,300 semipalmated sandpipers, 629 short-billed dow-

itchers, and 108 willets. Othersightings included2 blue gros- beaks and 8 grasshopper sparrowsat Crane WildlifeManagementAreain Fal- mouth;a seasidesparrow at Sandy Neck in Barnstable; and 290 red knots and 3 black terns in North Chatham.
