- Trace the black lines on the
paper side of the fusible web
with a mechanical pencil. The
appliqué template pieces may
need to be pieced together when
fusing to the background if
they are wider than the fusible
web. Draw the negative space
areas (hair, face, neck, etc.) on
additional fusible web, allowing
a little extra seam allowance to
be caught under the black lines. - Fuse the appliqué templates to
the fabrics. Allow them to cool
and then cut out. - Cut a piece of lightweight
muslin the desired fi nished size
of the quilt as a foundation.

Fabric
choices
- I use black batik for the
appliqué fabric—black
because it resembles Pop Art
and batik because it is tightly
woven and small appliqué
pieces will be less likely to
fray. - Select narrow stripes, small
dots, small geometrics,
solids, and tone-on-tone
fabrics for the negative
space. Large scale fl orals/
prints or muted colors are
not recommended.
