year with an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.
Another fascinating element of the work is that
a significant amount of photography exists of
a shirtless Russell, clad in Native American
clothing, posing in his studio holding this pose.
Other works include The Scout, an 1895
watercolor on paper, estimated at $225,000 to
$325,000; On the Warpath, another watercolor,
estimated at $50,000 to $75,000; and Stone-in-
Moccasin Woman, an oil portrait of a woman
and child, estimated at $70,000 to $100,000.
“All over the country collectors have seen
our successes with Russell works, and seen our
prices that we get, so we’re very fortunate we
can get so many great buyers and sellers who
trust us on Russell works,” Braaten says. “It’s
always fun for us as well, because every year
we see an amazing variety of Russell works. Just
this year alone I helped get two pieces included
in the Russell catalogue raisonné. People start
looking in their closets and realize they’ve had

something that has been handed down for
generations. We just never know what we’re
going to see next.”
In addition to the Russell works, the auction
will also offer a number of other important
works from both historic and contemporary
artists. Those highlights include pieces by Oleg
Stavorwsky, Jenness Cortez, R. Tom Gilleon,
Edgar Paxson, Jim Carson, Luke Frazier,
C. Michael Dudash, Olaf C. Seltzer, Andy
Thomas, Will James, John Fery, Jeremy Winborg,
Frank Schoonover and many others.
“With the contemporary artists, we get so
many standouts because we have an open call
for artwork, which is we find so many great
surprises each year. We must look at 1,000
pieces of artwork, but only select 200 pieces,”
Braaten adds. “The caliber of our artists reflects
the competitive process to get in. It ensure our
collectors and our audience are getting the best
of the best.”
