TALKING LOUD

“A

lot of people are afraid of
their own sadness or of having
negative feelings. You can be
so concerned with being happy,
looking happy and maintaining this facade
of joy that you refuse to accept how
sadness is a necessary part of life. If you
don’t feel unhappy sometimes, then you
can’t truly embrace feelings of elation –
you need that polarity.
“It comes from the way everybody is
raised: you’re constantly being pushed to
do the things that make you ‘successful’ and
financially viable, and make life choices in
the pursuit of money and the idea that wealth
will make you happy. However, that lifestyle
comes with an overwhelming amount of stress,
and it can affect your social life and lead to
depression. People feel sad on the inside, but
are afraid to show it because they fear being
labelled or told to ‘cheer up’. That pain is
important, though, because it leads to real
happiness. You need to learn from your pain,
instead of covering it up and trying to avoid it.
“In past romantic relationships and in my
relationships with my family, a lot of problems
have come about because I didn’t have an
outlet for my feelings, or someone who was
willing to talk about the darker thoughts in
my brain. It’s scary and off-putting to place
somebody in a situation where they have to
see the ‘other’ side of you; it can mean you end
up with no-one to talk to, and thus you’re left
alone with your thoughts and things can build
to an emotional cataclysm. That’s happened
to me multiple times: I’ve repressed things
and let them build up, and out of nowhere I’ve
snapped and ended up damaging or ruining
the relationships around me because I haven’t
expressed how I’m feeling.

“Embracing sadness was a big reason
I was interested in making a record like Kill
The Sun, because I saw how it could be that
long-sought-after outlet I’d been looking for.
With Cane Hill’s heavier music, I don’t often
get to touch on sadness – the lyrics tend to
revolve around anger – so this EP allowed
me to pour out feelings that I normally hide
away into my art and create a cathartic
escape. It’s nice to think that Kill The Sun
might be that outlet for people who hear it,
and help them realise that there are many
others who feel the same way they do.” K!
