COUNTRY GARDENS // FA LL 2019
Hard-shell gourds of
every description are
fascinating and fun to
grow. Dickie and Linda
Martin grow 12 acres
of gourds on their
farm in South Carolina.
They sell their harvest
at the farm, by mail
order, and at gourd
shows throughout the
Southeast and in Ohio.
In a garden, allow the
sprawling vines plenty
of room to grow. The
gourds in this photo
include small bottle
gourds, a twisted-stem
dipper gourd, tiny
Tennessee spinners,
warty gourds, an apple
gourd, a Mexican water
bottle gourd, a club
gourd, Indonesian
bottle gourds, and a
birdhouse gourd.
