COUNTRY GARDENS // FA LL 2019

Crocus, tulips, and hyacinths are the fi rst to unfurl
their charms as the garden awakens from its winter
slumber, followed by spring-fl owering classics
such as creeping phlox, old-fashioned lilacs, lady’s
mantle, and columbine. Vivacious shades of
pink, purple, gold, and orange shine in summer
as coreopsis, bee balm, conefl ower, and daylilies
shimmer in the sun. And by autumn, the garden bids
a bejeweled adieu with black-eyed Susan, goldenrod,
asters, and mums.

ABOVE Showy Phlox paniculata Flame Purple Eye adds fragrance
to Elizabeth’s garden and is a big draw for butterfl ies.
