COUNTRY GARDENS // FA LL 2019
The garden hides behind a tall picket fence;
multiple climbers cloak its rear entrance, a gated
arbor. Designed to unfold like a delightful surprise,
the space is much like the rejuvenated garden in
one of Elizabeth’s favorite books, The Secret Garden
by Frances Hodgson Burnett. “You don’t see the
beauty of the garden until you enter under the arbor,”
Elizabeth says. “Then everywhere you look, it’s
bursting with color and you feel like you’re in a totally
different world.”
Thanks to Elizabeth’s dauntless spirit, what was
once a forgotten landscape has become an inviting
escape not only for her but also for her many guests.
She shares her surroundings by hosting luncheons for
historical societies and other groups that find solace
in the outdoors. “I love that you can take something
that looks like nothing and nurture it into something
beautiful,” Elizabeth says. “It’s love that makes the
flowers grow.”
