Project Calm – July 2019

(Nandana) #1
You will need: vase, pull-out stencil sheet, craft knife, masking tape,
paper, cutting mat, spray paint

  1. Cut out the stencil using a sharp scalpel. Be patient and go
slowly and mindfully as it’s a delicate design. A trick is to make
cuts for the wave shapes in the same direction at once, to save
    continually turning the stencil.

  2. Using masking tape, fix a paper collar around the areas of the
vase you don’t want to get sprayed.

  3. Attach the stencil to the vase using masking tape. Pleat it at the
top and bottom to follow the cylinder shape of the vase. Make
sure the stencil is fixed firmly in place so it doesn’t move!

  4. Spray the stencil with paint. Carefully peel off the stencil to
reveal your design and allow to dry.

Have you got a plain vase squirrelled away in your cupboard that
could do with an update? Stencilling is an easy way to give items
a new lease of life and this mermaid tail design looks so pretty
flowing around a ceramic or glass vase.
You may wish to enlarge or reduce the stencil on a photocopier,
to suit a smaller or larger vessel. Photocopy the stencil if you’re
going to use it for a number of projects in case it tears at any point.
We’ve gone for a two-tone vase in cream and grey, and white
spray paint for a natural look. But this stencilled design works
equally well with bright colour for a vibrant vibe, or try two shades
of toning paint to create a cool ombre effect.
Display your completed, hand-stencilled vase on a shelf to
evoke memories of sunny beach days paddling in the sea.
