DameJanelaterrevealedhowshehad
firstmetHarryinDecemberandagain
inJune,alongwiththeDuchessandbaby
Archie,atFrogmoreHouse,nearthe
family’sFrogmoreCottagehome.
Janesaid:“Harryaskedif I wouldgo
andmeethim.Theymademea Dame
oftheBritishEmpiresoI guesshe
thoughtit wouldbegoodtomeetme.
Andweclicked.
“WetalkedaboutRootsandShoots
andI said:‘Ofcourseyou’reinterested
nowyouhavea baby.’Andhesaid:‘Of
course!’Whenyoubringa childintothe
world,youhavetoworryaboutthe
future.Ifwedon’tmakechange,we
don’thavea future,it’sassimpleasthat.
“[Meghan]toldme:‘You’vebeenmy
idolsince I wasa child. I’vehero-
worshippedyouallmylife.’Shecamein
at theendwithArchieandI gotto cuddle

inTanzania,DameJanenowrunsa
globalinstitute,promotingresearch,
conservationandyoungleadership
throughRootsandShootsgroupsin 130
countries,with150,000members.
At last week’s meeting Harry called
for an end to single-use plastic,
describingit asa “dirtyhabit”.Andhe
describedJaneas“awomanofkindness,
warmth,immenseknowledgeanda
softnessthat’sneededbymankindjust
asmuchasit is bychimpkind”.
Hecontinued:“I’vebeenadmiring
herworksinceI wasa kidandit wasso
wonderfultofindthatshewaseven
moreamazinginperson.Sheeven
treatedmetoa chimpwelcome,which
onlyJanecando– well,andchimps.”
Encouragingthedelegatesto continue
theirconservationefforts,hesaid:
“As mygrandmothertheQueenonce
said:‘Sometimestheworld’sproblemsare
sobigwethinkwecandolittletohelp.
Onourownwecannotendwarsorwipe
outinjustice,butthecumulativeimpact
ofthousandsofsmallactsofgoodness
canbebiggerthanweimagine.’”
Afterwards,DameJanesaidshe’d
invitedtheDuketovisitherprojectsin
Tanzania.“PrinceHarryhasa really
goodgrasponwhatwe’vebeendoing
andwhatwe’veaccomplished,”shesaid.
“Hewasimpressedwiththeyoung
peoplethathespoketo,andtheseare
theyoungleadersofthefuture.”
TheDukebelievesthatworking
withcommunitiesis keytocreatinga
sustainablefuturefortheplanet.Hewill
launch a new environment and
communityinitiativeintheautumn
aheadofhisandMeghan’s tour of
southernAfrica.
