injured in a plane crash. The light
aircraft in which he was flying came
down eight miles from Hanover, killing
the three other occupants.

p40 When the North American
Soccer League “calmly announced
that the league had been restructured”,
Paul Gardner felt “yes, you can just
about believe that...if you believe that
the Americans restructured Hiroshima
and Nagasaki”. Gardner went on to explain
that “in 1980 the league had consisted
of 24 clubs...at the time of writing NASL
is down to 14”.

in his regular
column, Brian
Glanville offers
his support to
Stanley Rous,
agreeing with him
that “there should
be only eight
teams in the finals
of the World Cup;
not 16, let alone
the present 24”.

p36 Keir Radnedge told of worrying
events concerning Serie A side Avellino
during a training session. He revealed:
“While most of the first team were out
on the pitch, a bunch of masked gunmen
burst into the dressing rooms, herded
coaches and reserves into the shower
rooms and stole the £10,000 bonus
money due to the players for their 1-0
win over Como the previous Sunday.”

p34 Colo Colo were champions in
Chile – thanks to two points received
for winning a pre-season tournament.
Eric Weil pointed out “Cobreloa...won
a match more to finish with a 20-6-4
record against the champions’ 19-8-3”
and “both teams totalled 46 points in
actual league play”.
