Expand your horizons on a Chilean island, sample colonial-era
cool in Shanghai, and lap up luxury in Madrid’s Literary Quarter

WRITER: DAVEN WU

Intrepid explorers of Chile’s wildly beautiful
coastline rave about the green hills and
wide horizons of the country’s Chiloé
Island. It is home to Tierra Chiloé, a hotel
that has just doubled in size thanks to
a new wing by its original architects, Mobil.
Designed by Ignacio Irarrázaval, the 12 new
rooms feature lenga timber, local stone,
handmade textiles and wood-carvings.

It’s easy to overlook Shanghai’s increasingly
precious colonial-era piles, lost among
the towering skyscrapers. All the more
reason to applaud the Gaga group’s latest
venture, the transformation of a historic
school building into a restaurant and café.
Designed by Coordination Asia, the eatery
serves an Asian-inlected Mediterranean
menu and attracts both suits and tai-tais
(ladies who lunch), who stream in from the
neighbouring Rales City mall.
