SHOWCASE
How we built

How do you translate the energy of a cult cartoon series to its website?

Active Theory’s Michael Anthony and Rafael Dante explain how

they went about it

RICK AND MORTY

HOW WE BUILT

(1) The garage: the website journey starts
with the homepage placed in the garage,
which is where Rick and Morty normally
begin all of their adventures. (2) 2.5 scene:
we created a 2.5D effect by positioning
the layers in z-space with a parallax effect
in order to give the scene a 3D feel. (3)
Interactive elements: the user is always
invited to explore the scene. The objects
below the TV have some physics behaviour
applied and they can be dragged around.

(4) Portal gun Easter egg: if the user finds
the portal gun and clicks on it, it’s possible to
open up portals, travel to other dimensions
and explore the universe. (5) The menu:
based on the original assets from the show,
we’ve created some special devices like the
menu. It slides down, following the scroll
and makes the navigation easy and clean.
(6) TV transition: by clicking on the TV, the
visitor jumps right into it to watch videos and
interact with other people.

BRIEF
Rick and Morty is an animated sci-fi sitcom
created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon
for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. The client
wanted a content hub with three priorities
in mind: serving video content, helping sell
Rick and Morty products and also showcasing
promotional content.
