LCND more usable. Why is this important? Well, next time you’re
shooting your big end-of-day, super sexy finale shot and the cam-
era is on a Steadicam or a crane or a drone and there’s even a
slight delay, your DP is going to stop everything to adjust the ND.
No choice, it has to be done. Which means pulling the Steadicam
off or lowering the crane, swapping ND filters and rebalancing.
This all takes time, unless you have a controllable LCND filter.
Or, if you’re filming one of those shots that runs from outside to
inside a building, your AC (or maybe DIT) would have to do an iris
pull. Opening, or closing, the iris during the shot is done all the
time, but if you remember your Photography 101, you know that
when you change the iris—the aperture—you’re going to affect the
depth of field, which in a moving image can be very noticeable. If
you’re working wide open, your beautiful bokeh may even disap-
pear. With an LCND, none of these things happen. (Plus, it just

As for things I would own in order to rent back to a production—
which helps pad the average meager indie film salary—the possibili-
ties are numerous.
Cine Gear could well be the Baskin Robbins of camera flavors as
there are more than 31 4K, or better, camera options to choose from.
Most are purchase options only for rental houses and high-end cine-
matographers. As for JVC, Sony and Panasonic, they also offer numer-
ous entry paths into their particular ecosystems. Like arguing over
Rocky Road versus Fudge Ripple, we can spend days debating the
