Step 3

1 Once the first layer

is dry, use the same

method (with your

brush and water) to

add another wash over

the flower head, this

time, with a mix of

cadmium yellow and

cadmium orange.

Focus on the shadows

of the flower head.

2 Mix ultramarine blue

with cadmium yellow

and continue to place

a wash on the stem.

Technique used: Wet on dry

Wild mustard’s common names

are charlock and field mustard.

It is an annual or winter annual

plant of the genus sinapisin the

family brassicaceae. It has rosette-

shaped leaves at the bottom and

narrow leaves further up the stem,

and it grows up to 3in. tall. Loved

by caterpillars, wild mustard grows

in hedgerows, on roadside verges,

waste ground and field edges.

Small yellow flowers appear from

May to October on tangled wiry

stems. Its edible parts are the

young leaves, seeds and flowers.

You will need

nSurface

lFabriano 300lb

watercolour paper

nBrushes

lWinsor & Newton Round

No. 4 or 6

nWatercolour

lCadmium yellow

lCadmium orange

lOlive green

lUltramarine blue

nMiscellaneous

lHB or 2B pencil

lWaterproof ink liner pen

lPalette or saucer for paint

lJar for water

lPaper towel

Step 1

1 Mix a small amount of cadmium yellow

and cadmium orange onto your palette or

saucer. Next, add a small amount of olive

green and ultramarine blue on the palette.

2 Lay your watercolour paper flat on

the board or table and begin to draw

the wild mustard with your pencil.

Use photographs or images from the

internet as reference material.

Step 2

Dip your brush into the water

jar and add a small amount

of pigment and begin to paint

a wash on the flower, moving

down to the stem, filling the

whole area of the plant. You

should see a translucent

colour. Leave to dry.
