Inluential American artist Joan Jonas and young
Vietnamese artist Thao-Nguyen Phan met regularly
in New York, and also travelled together in Italy, India
and Vietnam. ‘As an American, visiting Vietnam is
a highly charged experience,’ Jonas says, ‘but it was
great to visit with Thao and to experience a very
diferent artistic world.’ Jonas’ inluence became clear
in the installation unveiled during the Berlin weekend,
in which Phan’s deceptively simple paintings, some
of them on discarded X-ray sheets, were joined by
her irst-ever video piece, a split-screen meditation on
colonialism and memory called Tropical Siesta. It’s clear
Phan and Jonas have developed a mutual admiration
that goes beyond mere words: as Jonas says, ‘I enjoyed
being with her; we often didn’t even need to talk.’
