In his opening presentation, David Chipperield
commented, ‘Compared with other artists, architects
have a vicarious connection with the process of
creation. We’re not doing things on a building site in
the way that a ilm director, say, is doing things on a set.
That makes the mentor-protégé relationship diferent,
too.’ Instead, he and his protégé Simon Kretz came up
with a theoretical project, comparing Swiss and British
planning approaches to a densely built urban site in
East London. Kretz enlisted students from the Institute
for Urban Design at ETH Zurich, where he is a senior
lecturer, to apply Swiss planning guidelines to the site.
‘David is very good at relating idealistic and pragmatic
thoughts,’ says Kretz, ‘and I think that is one of the most
diicult things to do in architecture and planning.’
