The aluminium workshop, the heart of the shipyard,
has four dry docks. Out of shot to the left is the 50m
FDHF and on the right are the first sections of a
new 50m hull. ‘Aluminium is lighter than steel, but
it needs a more skilled workforce,’ says Cavendish.
‘Aluminium yachts will use about two-thirds less
fuel than a steel boat and can do about 20 to 30
knots. They are the Ferraris of the water; their
steel equivalents are more of a Rolls-Royce.’
