Williamson Williamson’s new oice for
Pilot Cofee upgrades an earlier project by
bringing a head oice into an established
roastery and café. Set on Wagstaf Drive in
Toronto’s east end, the original building, an
old warehouse, was concrete and tough –
perfectly suited to this very contemporary
expression of small-scale industry. The local
architects’ irst intervention, in 2014, created
a holistic environment for roasting,
distribution and training, helping the brand
grow from two to more than 80 staf in a
matter of years. When it came to extending
this burgeoning business’ space, the best
option was a rooftop addition, hung on a
truss beam that spans the entire width of the
original warehouse, supported by extended

concrete walls. Necessarily light, the shell
is made of steel, with a bold yellow frame
and glass walls. The addition has enabled
Pilot to keep its operation uniied, helping to
promote inclusivity and work-life balance.
