In the Favourites section of the new window or tab page, Ctrl+click and use
the ‘Sort By’ option to sort the items by name or address.

Step-by-step Customise Safari startup options

1

Open Safari
Go to Preferences and on the General
tab, click ‘Safari opens with’. We’ll choose ‘A
new window’ but there are options to continue
browsing last time with all windows.

4

Show top sites
Select ‘Top Sites’ for ‘New windows open
with’ and below, choose how many sites are
displayed. Top sites are the websites you visit
the most and are useful to have on startup.

2

Open with Favourites
Now that Safari opens with a new
Window, click on ‘New windows open
with’. Empty page is the fastest, but select
‘Favourites’ instead.

5

Start with tabs
Windows normally open with one tab, but
several can be opened, such as a collection
of your favourites. Click ‘New windows open
with’, and then select ‘Choose tabs folder’.

3

Select bookmarks
When New windows open with Favourites
is at the top, ‘click Favourites’ shows below. If
you have organised bookmarks into folders,
which is useful, select your favourite one.

6

Select startup tabs
Browse your bookmarks and favourites
and select a folder with just a few items. Be
careful. Selecting Favourites for example, could
open 100+tabs! Pick a subfolder.

7

See Siri suggestions
Set new windows and tabs to open
favourites, then go to System Preferences>Siri
and click ‘Siri Suggestions & Privacy’. Select
Safari and tick the two checkboxes.

8

Choose startup options
With new windows/tabs set to Favourites,
open a new tab. Ctrl+click anywhere and use
the menu to choose what is on this page, like
Favourites, frequent sites and Siri.

9

Customise suggestions
At the bottom, Siri suggests websites you
might want to visit. Ctrl+click items that appear
here and tell Siri not to suggest it or to suggest
less if you don’t like it.
