KEY COMPOSITING SKILL NO.1 SELECTIONS
Selections help us isolate part of a shot, so they’re
vital for composites as they allow us to cut out
precise pieces. Here the Quick Selection tool lets us
select the blocks by seeking out the colors and edges
in the image as we paint with it. Watch the video to
find out more about the Quick Selection tool.
Other useful selection tools you can try are the Magic
Wand, Object Selection and Select Subject command.
There’s also a command in the Properties panel,
available once a layer is selected. The Quick Actions
section shows a ‘Remove background’ button, which
uses AI to isolate your subject with a layer mask. This
can be great for simple cutouts, or as a starting point
for further selection tools.

01

PREPARE THE BLOCKS
Open the portrait and the
block images into Photoshop.
Go to the first block image.
Here we need to remove the
letters. Select the letters
with the Magic Wand then go
to Edit>Fill, set Use:Content-
Aware and hit OK. Next go to
Image>Adjustments>Black and
White. Drag over the blocks to
brighten them, then hit OK.

02

SELECT AND COPY
Grab the Quick Selection
tool and paint over the blocks
to select them. The tool snaps
on to edges as you paint. It can
sometimes pick up the wrong
area - if this happens hold Alt
and paint to subtract from the
initial selection.
