If my winterlandscapeshada styleit wouldbe
describedas ‘simplicity’.I lookforcleanlinesand
bold,stronggraphicshapesthatappeal,as do bags
ofmoodanddrama.But, aboveall,I likemy images
tolookcleanandwithoutcomplicatedmessthat
di stractstheviewer.It’sa caseof searchingforthe
ri ghtscenein therightconditions,andsometimes
ju stwaitinguntilthemainingredientsfallinto
pl ace,suchas thecloudsor light.Agreatdealof time
can be spentlocationhuntingandfine-tuningthe
vi ewpoint,andthenjusthangingaroundfreezing
yourtoesoffwhileMotherNaturetriesto make
uphermindas to whethershe’sgoingto playball
ornoton thatoccasion.
Intermsof cameragear,I needa bodyandlenses
thatareverywellweather-sealed.Theamountof
moisturethatcanbe in theair– mist,frost,fog,
snowandevencondensationfromyourownbreath
- can all playhavocwithkit if it creepsintothe
wrongplaces.I shootwithtwoNikonbodies–
D8 10 andD850– coupledwiththeexceptionally
well weather-sealedZeissMilvusprimes,and
haveneverhada problem,evenwhenshootingin
the Arctic.Justas importantas thecamerakit is
yourownwell-being.If you’recoldyouwillnot
concentrate,willwantto packup andgo somewhere
warm,andwillprobablymisstheshot.Getdressed
inlayers,preferablyusingMerinowoolas a base
la yer.Awarmandwind-proofouterjacketis also
goingto be essential,as is wearingappropriate
