Not only do I agree with Matt Bolton’s comments in
the December 2019 issue (“If Apple is going to tinker
so much, it needs to get better at communication”),
but I would expand his remarks to include macOS.
I’ve used Macs since 1991. I am now 66 years old and, unfortunately,
not as mentally sharp as I used to be. Having two Apple operating systems

(If I included the Apple Watch in my argument, that would be three.
Fortunately for me, I don’t own or use one.)
With the gradual but increasing lack of instructions and information
derxw#qhz#pdfRV#dqg#lRV#dssv/#xsjudghv/#dqg#Ľupzduh#xsgdwhv/#L#dp#
increasingly befuddled and annoyed. The bugs and subsequent problems
with apps, including iMessage (or is it Messages, as it is labeled on my
MacBook Pro?), for example, have increased my dissatisfaction with Apple.
Perhaps the young(er) folks who use Apple products, and I imagine are
the primary target for Apple marketing, don’t have the problems I discuss
here. Then again, am I the only Apple product user, young or not, who
experiences the challenges I do with their products?
I think of Apple as being less rigorous about their software and less

In March this year I bought
a new 2018 MacBook Pro 13–
inch at the Apple Store with
AppleCare. I immediately
noticed that when I deleted
individual emails, sometimes
two emails got deleted. I spent
a lot of time on the phone to
Apple trying to fix my Mail
program, and I ultimately
realized that it was the keyboard
itself — and more specifically the
Delete key — that was at fault.
I brought my MacBook into the
Genius Bar and they replaced
the faulty key, but a few weeks
later it started happening again.
I took it in to Apple again and
this time they kept it over theweekend and replaced the
whole keyboard.
It seemed like the problem
was fixed, but a few months
later the same thing started
happening with the E–key.
I spent a couple of hours on
the phone with support and
ultimately what they offered
was for me to send in my laptop
to them, and they would return
it to me in nine days. I can’t be
without my laptop, so I asked if
I could just utilize my AppleCare
to swap it out for a new machine
and I was informed that “all of
the new laptops have this same
issue, so that won’t solve the
problem”. I was really shocked
to learn that Apple would shipout laptops with a known defect.
Is this possibly true? As a 30–
year loyal fan of Apple products,
I’m feeling pretty let down and
seriously wondering if it’s time
to jump ship!

feature the updated (and
reliable) keyboard as found
in the new MacBook Pro 16–
inch, so hopefully by then
Apple will have sorted the

I would like to voice my huge
dislike of iOS 13. So far it’s been
the worst release of any iOS
since iOS 8 (which was just as
bad). What I fail to understand
is, when Apple has something
working well, (i.e. iOS 12) they
try to “fix” it. Hey Apple! It
wasn’t broken! But it is now.
iPadOS is absolutely awful
too. I tried it but reinstalled iOS
12 on my iPad Pro2 because it
actually worked. Auto–filled
passwords did not work, multi–
tasking was dismal, split screen
was awful... and so on. The
wheel has been a solid design
for a long time and, so far,
nobody has found an
improvement! Why can’t
software design follow that
same philosophy?
