BLOCK TUTORIAL

Understandingyourtemplates

Eachsetof templatesis comprisedof a triangleanda

trapezoid.Thesmallersetwillcreatea 4infinishedsquare,

andthelargersetwillcreatean8infinishedsquare.The

setsarecolour-coordinatedforease.Eachblockconsistsof

fourrounds,withaninnerand outer set of triangles around

a central square(Fig 1 ).

Usethetriangletemplatetocuttheinsidetriangles,

aligningthemarkedlinewiththefabricedge.Then,

usethesamemethodtocutthe outside triangles,

aligning thebottom edge.

Usea regularquiltingrulertocutthecoloured

centresquareforeachblock.Cuta 1insquareif

you’remakingthesmallblock or a 2in square if you’re

makingthelargeblock.

Assemblingtheblock

First,sewinsidetrianglestooppositesidesofyour

centralsquare.Pressseamsopen.Sewtheremaining

inside triangles to the other sides(Fig 2 ). Trim ‘dog-ears’.

Startbychoosingonesetoftemplatesforeitherthe

largeorthesmallblockandcutstripsoffabrictothe

requiredwidth.Youwillneed1in-widestripsforthe

smallblocktrapezoids and 1in-wide strips for the large

blocktrapezoids.

Usethetrapezoidtemplatetocutthestripsinto

rounds.Tocutpiecesforrounds1 and2,alignthe

topedgeofthetrapezoidwithonelongedgeofthestrip.

Useyourrotarycuttertotrimbothedges.Rotatethe

template180-degrees,thencutalongtherightedge

tocutthesecondpiece. Continue working in this way

across the strip.

Beginsewingthetrapezoidstotheblock.First,sew

theround1 pieces,pressingeachoneandtrimming

‘dog-ears’beforemovingtothenext(Fig 3 ). Thensew

rounds2,3 and4 (Fig 4 ). Finally, sew the outside corners

to complete the block.
