Hide your bookmarks in Chrome

ost of us enjoy the convenience of browser

bookmarks but they’re difficult to keep private

becauseanyonewhousesyourPCcanviewthem.

Here,welookatwaystohideanddisguiseyourbookmarks.

You can even remove them from your

browser but keep them accessible in a

convenientfilethatcanbe dragged and

droppedintoyourbrowser window.

It maybeenoughtosimplyremovethebookmarksbar

(^1) (situatedbelowtheaddressbar),soyourbookmarks
arenotimmediatelyvisible.ClickChrome’smenubutton,
(^2) hoveroverBookmarks (^3) andclick‘Showbookmarksbar’
(^4) toremovethetick.Thebookmarksbardisappears.

Tryhidingbookmarksbyplacingthemin innocuous-
lookingfolders.FromthesameBookmarksmenu,pick
‘Bookmarkmanager’.Addfolders^1 byright-clicking
anemptyspacein anexistingfolder.Youcanalsoedit
bookmarks,^2 removing the title so only the icon is displayed.

Thebestwaytohidebookmarksis toremovethem
fromyourbrowser.Exportingthemcreatesa listof
HTMLlinksthatyoucanopenin yourbrowserlikea
webpage,thensimplyclickthelinkstovisityoursaved
pages.OpentheBookmarksmanager^1 asshownin Step2.

ClickOrganize,^1 select‘Exportbookmarks’^2 and
save the file somewhere handy but safe. You can
change the file’s name to disguise it, but keep the
‘.html’ file format. To open a bookmark, drag the file to your
browser and find the bookmark you need in the list of links.

ToremoveyourbookmarksfromChrome,clickoneof
thetop-levelfolders,suchas‘Bookmarksbar’.^1 Press
Ctrl+Atohighlighteverything,^2 thenclickDelete.^3
You may have to repeat the process with more than one
folder, such as ‘Other bookmarks’ and ‘Mobile bookmarks’.^4

To add more bookmarks to your hidden list, re-import
thelistbackintoChrome,editit, thenexportit again.
OpentheBookmarksmanager,clicktheOrganise
buttonandchoose‘Importbookmarks’.^1 Find yoursaved
file, make any bookmark updates, then export it again.^2
