PRACTICAL

be free of lumps and bumps. Use a little
turpentine with a soft absorbent cloth when
using oil paints; acrylic paint is removed with
a damp cloth and luke-warm water and then
paper towels to dry them. Pay close attention
to the handle and neck of the blade when
you are cleaning as paint residue gathers
there.
It takes practice to get the result or the
mark you want but with perseverance it
becomes far more intuitive. Practice really
will make perfect and you’ll be delighted
that you persevered and extended your
repertoire of painting techniques –
especially in an expressive way!

 DETAIL 2
Note how the
pumice textures
combine to
express the
textures in
the river
stones. Royal
Talens acrylic
inks were
used for the
darker marks
to contrast
with the
brighter, thicker
applications of
acrylic paint

t DETAIL 1
This shows scumbled layers
of paint applied with
brush and palette
knives. Heavy-body
gel was added to
thicken the paint
still further where
needed and gloss
medium used to
make selected
pigments and
applications
more translucent
